Experiencing Haiti

After a 3am start, 29 hrs of travelling, 2 layovers and a long bumpy nauseating car ride, we are finally here! There is so much poverty and injustice here, it is overwhelming and discouraging! Can the 11 of us really make a difference?
Haiti Arise is amazing; the staff are so welcoming and friendly. The first day we got our barring, unpacked and settled in. There is a Medical Clinic, Elementary School, Tech Campus and Mechanic Shop, all within the 10 foot high walls. The second day was the start of the youth conference. There must have been about 300 people in the Church all wearing their Sunday best. Some of the service was in English, but mostly in Creole, therefore, there was a lot that we did not understand. This made us realize that worship really has its own language. We could see the passion and devotion of the Pastors and feel the Holy Spirt through the music and throughout the whole Church. The way the Haitians sing, dance and praise Jesus with such pride and faith is like nothing we have ever seen or felt before- it brought tears to our eyes.  For them, Jesus is at the forefront of their lives, their sustainer, redeemer, and provider. They really put God first in everything that they do and for many of them, they are new to Christianity. We have been Christian’s our whole lives and have never shown praise as strong as they do, something we can aspire to in the future.
In the evening, we took a tour around the second campus, which was as impressive as the first. They have a middle school and 4 houses with 2 more in the works.  These homes are for rescued orphans whom are accepted into loving families. Haiti Arise is involved in so many projects and is reaching so many people with God’s word and His Love. We are in awe that it was all started by just 2 people; it renews our faith that we really can make a difference in this world. With God on our side, we can carry out His miracles.
